When we released Bookdog 1.0 back in 2005 on April 29, we advertised that Bookdog would continue to provide access to Safari bookmarks until Apple did something that made it impractical. During the last six years, we've issued 172 free updates of Bookdog, maintaining compatibility through four major revisions of Mac OS X, four Safari versions, .Mac, and MobileMe.
To access Safari bookmarks in the presence of iCloud, however, Apple requires applications to do some heavy lifting which Bookdog is not architected to do. We have judged that it would not be practical to do the retrofitting that would be required.
Anticipating this day, however, three years ago we began development of a new bookmarks management app with an extensible architecture that could be readily adapted to new requirements. Last week we figured out how to access Safari bookmarks in the presence of iCloud, and today we happily announce that the latest version of BookMacster has this capability, and is available now.
If you wish to continue managing Safari bookmarks with more than Apple provides in Safari, you have two choices…
• Upgrade from Bookdog to BookMacster.
• Turn off iCloud syncing of Safari bookmarks. Your Safari bookmarks will no longer sync with your other Macs, iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch.
BookMacster can do everything that Bookdog does, and more. To get oriented with BookMacster, you might want to read the Guide for Bookdog Grads from the BookMacster Help Book. At the bottom of the BookMacster web page, you'll find the nice discounts which are given to loyal Bookdog users. (BookMacster is in fact free if you've purchased Bookdog recently.)
If you'd rather turn off iCloud syncing, click in the menu ▸ System Preferences. Under Internet and Wireless, click iCloud, un-check Bookmarks.
