and their servers do not allow you to share them. In order to provide an accurate view, Bookdog behaves in the same way.
del.icio.us Accounts
Q. How do I get rid of non-functional del.icio.us accounts that appear in Bookdog's File > Web Service menu? Answer: Bookdog gets these from one (or both) of two places.
(1) Your Mac OS X Keychain. In /Applications/Utilities, find and launch the Keychain Access application. Type "del.icio" into the search field and then use the ↓ arrow key to step through the search results. The account name is shown in the "detail" pane above the list. Delete any non-functional accounts. Note: This will also affect other applications, web browsers in particular. Keychain Access is a little-known feature of Mac OS X, and it can collect a lot of junk.
(2) Bookdog's Preferences. In Bookdog, click menu Bookdog > Preferences, then Bookmarks Documents at the far right of the toolbar. Delete any non-functional Google documents from the list.
Sorting
Q. I sorted my del.icio.us in Bookdog, but they're not sorted when I view them in del.icio.us.
Answer: The servers at del.icio.us order your bookmarks by the date you added them, with newest on the top. Bookdog keeps them sorted automatically, but this is merely a convenience for viewing them in Bookdog.
Saving/Uploading
Q. I don't see the bookmarks that I just saved on del.icio.us.
There are several possiblities here...
1. Bookmarks can be saved as
shared,

, or
not shared,

. If they are not shared, you must be logged into del.icio.us in order to see them on del.icio.us.
2. del.icio.us has several servers, and sometimes the server which you saved your bookmarks to may be "out of sync" with the server on which you are viewing your bookmarks. Usually this is only for a few minutes, but it has happened for longer than that. The solution is to reload the page later.
3. Please submit a support request, describing what happened, if you see any other issues with saving/uploading to del.icio.us. Although I can't fix things on the del.icio.us side, I can check out Bookdog's behavior, and help del.icio.us help you by providing technical information.
Q. What does menu File > Revert do to del.icio.us bookmarks?
Answer: To minimize the time it takes to up/download bookmarks, Bookdog maintains its own cache of your del.icio.us bookmarks (in ~/Library/Application Support/Bookdog), and carefully up/downloads only what is actually changed. Reverting will empty this cache and re-download all from del.icio.us.
Q. Why does it take so long to upload to del.icio.us when I have changed or deleted bookmarks and click 'Save'?
Answer: Presumably to limit the load on their servers, del.icio.us enforces Bookdog to limit the rate of changed or deleted bookmarks to only about 50 per minute, for the first 900 bookmarks, and only 12 per minute after 900. That's just the way del.icio.us has designed their service.
Q. What's with this Error 503 Service Unavailable?
Answer: Although Bookdog stays below del.icio.us' published "speed limits", and, as best as we can determine, their unpublished "speed limits", sometimes, after too much traffic of some kind, del.icio.us servers may perform an enforcement action. If you get repeated 503 Service Unavailable errors while you can still access del.icio.us using your web browser, this probably means that your I.P. address has been "banned". There are two ways to fix this when it happens:
• Go do something else for two hours. Banning lasts about 2 hours.
• If your Internet Service Provider gives you a dynamic I.P. address, as is probably the case if you have residential service, turn off your DSL or cable modem for a while, then turn it back on. You'll probably be given a new I.P. address and then you will no longer be banned. To verify, visit a site such as
What's My IP or
IP-address.com before and after the modem power cycling. With Earthlink here in San Jose (California), IP addresses change within a few minutes. But if your ISP is a small-town operation during non-busy hours, it could take much longer.
In either case, do not Cancel the upload. As long as you leave Bookdog running (sleeping your Mac is OK), Bookdog should pick up where it left off.
Before retrying after a 503 error or a regular timeout from del.icio.us, Bookdog waits:
1st time: 5 seconds
2nd time: 18 seconds
3rd time: 34 seconds
4th time: 65 seconds
5th time: 90 seconds
6th - ∞: 120 seconds
This is done because these errors may also be caused by temporary periods of high traffic or server failure at del.icio.us. This "backoff algorithm" gives their servers a chance to recover in these cases.
