Hello, Eric.

iCloud would be syncing Safari bookmarks.  There is no entry in System Preferences for Smarky.

In the toolbar in the main Smarky window, near the middle is a button labelled Syncing.  The middle of it tells you the sync status.  A green dot means that syncing is active.  A red exclamation point means that syncing is paused.  A gray line means that syncing is not even configured.

Indeed, you should not activate syncing until all is working satisfactorily.

Thanks, Jerry. Would that be syncing Smarky bookmarks or Safari bookmarks? When I check iCloud in system preferences there is no entry for Smarky. Should there be?

I could be wrong--as a newbie Smarky is a bit confusing; it will take time to learn my way around--but I don't believe I've set up syncing between Safari and Smarky.

I don't want Smarky to automatically import from or export to Safari. Until I learn my way around I'd like to do that manually.

You can force quit Smarky as you do any other app, by holding down option+command and hitting the esc key.

When I try to quit Smarky nothing happens. When I click on the red ball in the upper left hand corner, a message is displayed saying "Will close after operation in process is done."

I have not idea what operation is in process. I have a sneaking suspicion whatever it is it will go on forever.

Is there a way to force quit?
