Try these steps to show the console messages from BookMacster Button, which should provide some clues.
  • Activate Firefox
  • Click through main menu > Tools > Add-Ons & Themes > Extensions.
  • To the right of Manage Your Extensions, click the Gear button
  • In the contextual menu which appears, click Debug Add-Ons.
  • In the window which appears, tab Console, there should be three entries:
    • Will connect
    • Did connect
    • Waiting for Native Messages with info… … …
  • Now open another window to any web page
  • Click the BookMaster Status Item in the main menu bar
  • Verify that the new entry appears in that console:
    Got a message from Chromessenger:
    Object { command: "grabCurrentPageInfo" }
and a new such entry should appear each time you click the BookMaster Status Item in the main menu bar.

Well, it turned out that I spoke too soon. . .  Yesterday, bookmarking mostly did not work.  I tried each setting separately but it didn't help.

I'm wondering if one of the extensions I have installed in Firefox may be the problem.  At least that is something I can try without too much effort initially.  If it does work, identifying the problem extension(s) will take a bit longer to ID.  I have 9 mainly privacy/security extensions installed.

I'll be back to report, one way or the other. . .

Analyzing all of your evidence, it seems that run on sites with restrictions was the key.

I do not know what those restrictions are, and are they set by the site or the user?  I'm guessing probably the user.  Maybe you have flipped on some setting in Firefox to make all sites have these restrictions by default.

Browse in Firefox to about:addons.  Is BookMacster button enabled, with permissions to (1) exchdnage messages with other apps and (2) access browser tabs ???

Both permissions have green check-marks.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the BookMacster Button extension recently?

Yes, it is my default "do this first. . ."

So while I was on the Bookmacster page in the Firefox Add-Ons Manager I noticed that "run in private windows" and "run on sites with restrictions" were both checked "don't allow" which are the default settings.

Even though I do not use private windows and allowing the second option never occurred to me, I though "What the heck?" and enabled both. . .  Voila!  I can finally add bookmarks via the Finder Menu Bar method.

It doesn't make sense to me that this should work.  But giving it a try is one of those Hail Mary shots I've learned from experience after 30+ years using Macs and being on the Internet.

Thanks for the suggestion that lead to what appears to be a successful solution.  Now I have to see it stick over-time to really believe it. . .

Hmmm. . . I'm jealous!  I am able to access bookmarks but I do not have the option of landing new bookmarks.  But it does work for me when using Brave and Safari.

Do you have any ideas re trouble-shooting the cause and mitigating it?  If it works for you I would expect it to also work for me.

Hello, MrX.

The Status Item method works to land new bookmarks from Firefox too.  I just tried it.  See this screenshot, wherein I am about to land into BookMacster our website, which is being visitied in Firefox.

My apologies if I didn't supply enough info regarding the prior discussion.  I wasn't aware that the extension was upgraded back then.

I've been running v.34 of the Bookmacster Button.  I've tested it and I can use it to bookmark a URL.  But manually moving the URL from the Drop Basket to a subfolder in Bookmacster is painfully slow and persnickety to accomplish.

On the other hand, with Brave I can use the Bookmacster main (Finder) Menu Bar "Status Item" to quickly locate and select where I want to store the URL.  And if I want to bookmark additional related webpages, the last-used folder is the default destination, which also saves me time.

Since the Status Item method works with both Brave and Safari, should I assume that there is a reason specific to Firefox for why it is not a viable option?

Well, this took a bit of "research", but finally the memory came back to me  Huh

Apparently we resubmitted the BookMacster Button extension on July 9, 2024 to comply with Mozilla's new security regime.  The old version which does not comply was BookMacster Button 29.  Version numbers 30-32 were used in development but never submitted.  We submitted BookMacster Button 33 on July 9, then later that same day BookMacster Button 34.  It was approved by Mozilla within minutes, as usual.

So, you should have BookMacster Button 34 and it should work.

The last time we discussed this Firefox issue was July 8th & 13th, 2024.  Is there any news about when the resubmission process will be completed?

I have been copy/pasting URLs into Brave as a workaround and then into Bookmacster but it is a bit of pain, more-so when dealing with multiple websites. . .

I never thought that I would become a regular user of Firefox but its UI and security features have won me over, at least for now.
