BookMacster : Inexplicable Sync Fights

If a Sync Fight cannot be explained by improper configuration, one of the sync actors may be misbehaving.

(Because these issues are generally beyond our observation and control, we'd appreciate your reporting to us any successes or failures so that we can build appropriate workarounds into future BookMacster versions.  Clicking Help ▸ Trouble Zipper in BookMacster's menu is the best way to do that.)

Safari and iCloud

We have seen evidence that iCloud can sometimes be stubborn about not wanting a bookmark or two sorted.  We think that the solution may be to reset iCloud's Bookmarks syncing, like this…

• Activate the erring Bookmarkshelf document in BookMacster.

• If the toolbar indicates that syncing is enabled, click the button to Pause syncing.

• Click in the menu:  ▸ System Preferences.

• Click the tool iCloud.

• Switch off the checkbox labelled Bookmarks.

Leave both off for at least 5 minutes.

• In System Preferences, switch back on the checkbox labelled Bookmarks.

• Click that it's OK to Merge bookmarks.

Allow 20 minutes for bookmarks to resync with iCloud.

• Please examine your bookmarks in Safari by activating Safari and clicking in the menu: Bookmarks ▸ Show All Bookmarks.  Note that merging from iCloud may have downloaded bookmarks you no longer want.

• In BookMacster, likewise examine your Content.

• If you want to push your BookMacster Content into Safari and iCloud, erasing whatever is currently in Safari and iCloud, click in the menu: Bookmarkshelf ▸ Export.  If you want the opposite, click Import first, then Export.  In either case, you may reorganize as desired before Export.

• In BookMacster, click the button to Resume syncing.

It will prompt you to Export.  Click It's OK because you've just done so.

If all goes well, there will be no more Sync Fights.

Diigo

We've discovered a bug in Diigo's interface, which is that if involve simply changing the name (title) of a bookmark to a different name or title which has fewer characters (letters) as the original name, Diigo will ignore the change, and this results in a partial Sync Fight.  It's partial because BookMacster can't trigger  on changes from web apps.  But it will be counted as a fight during the next sync.  To work around the problem, give the offending bookmark(s) a longer name, or changing it in My Library on Diigo's web page would probably work.
