Google Bookmarks™

Q.  I just ran Bookdog for the first time.  My del.icio.us and/or Google™ accounts were already listed in Bookdog's menu, and also I didn't even have to enter my password to access them.  Is Bookdog sniffing around in my private information?  Answer:  Well-designed web browsers such as Safari and Camino ask if you want to put a website password in your Mac OS X Keychain after you've entered it for the first time.  Bookdog is "Keychain aware" and fetches the info out of there.  (Bookdog returns the favor by entering into Keychain any such account information that you enter into Bookdog.)

Q.  How do I get rid of non-functional Google accounts that appear in Bookdog's File > Web Service menu?  Answer:  Bookdog gets these from one (or both) of two places.

(1) Your Mac OS X Keychain.  In /Applications/Utilities, find and launch the Keychain Access application.  Type "google" into the search field and then use the ↓ arrow key to step through the search results.  The account name is shown in the "detail" pane above the list.  Delete any non-functional accounts.  Note: This will also affect other applications, web browsers in particular.  Keychain Access is a little-known feature of Mac OS X, and it can collect a lot of junk.

(2) Bookdog's Preferences.  In Bookdog, click menu Bookdog > Preferences, then Bookmarks Documents at the far right of the toolbar.  Delete any non-functional Google documents from the list.

Q.  My Google Bookmarks™ appear sorted alphabetically in Bookdog, but they're not sorted when I view them in GoogleAnswer:  The servers at google.com show bookmarks in the order they received them, with the newest on top.  Bookdog keeps them sorted for easy viewing, but this sorting cannot be uploaded to Google.

Q.  When I clicked "Save" to upload my bookmarks to Google, Bookdog deleted some of them instead of uploading them.  Why?   There are two possibilities; either both....

(a) You had duplicate pairs of bookmarks.  Google does not allow duplicate bookmarks will silently delete the older one if Bookdog tries to upload another.

(b)  Google™ Bookmarks only properly supports bookmarks with scheme http:// or ftp:// at this time (updated 2007 Nov 19).  The behavior for other bookmarks is:

  1.  You can set them using your web browser at http://google.com/bookmarks.
  2.  You can see their URL in a tooltip when you mouse over them in
  3.  You can see also see their URL when you click "edit".
  4.  But if you click on them in http://google.com/bookmarks, nothing happens.
  5.  If you click Export Bookmarks, their <link> attributes are empty.
  6.  If you view your Google™ Bookmarks in an RSS reader (or click the RSS button in Safari's address bar), and then click "Read more..." under a feed:// bookmark, you get a 404 error.

So, that's why Bookdog filters out duplicate, and non-http/non-ftp bookmarks before uploading.
