Valid points of concern. Thanks for elaborating, Jerry.
Didn't know there was no option to write bookmarks to Safari. I thought the app would merely serve as a syncing interface and that's all. Forgot that you cannot easily access or write Safari bookmarks. Hmm, sad.

Because of the design of iOS by Apple,

• In order to visit a bookmark from your BookMacster collection, you'd need to switch to our hypothetical iOS app first.

• Tapping a bookmark in our hypothetical iOS app would visit the bookmark in Safari – not Chrome or any other browser, except that, for users of iOS 8, possibly we could work with developers of independent browsers to "accept" visits from our hypothetical app.  Because there is no Firefox on iOS, that is not an "issue", but it makes less of a use case for our hypothetical iOS app.

• To add a new bookmark to our hypothetical iOS app, you would need to  (1) Click on the arrow-jumping-out-of-the-square  (2) Swipe to see "More…"  (3) Tap "More…"  (4) Tap on the icon of our hypothetical iOS app.  All of this requires iOS 8 or later.  It's not too bad, although adding a bookmark to Safari requires only two swipe/taps instead of four.

* * *

I don't know.  I'm worried that, because these issues would be unexpected to most users, instead of just not using our hypothetical iOS app, people would try it, become frustrated with jumping through all of these hoops and limitations, then leave 1-star reviews.

Jerry, I think this is not an ideal situation.

Feature request: iOS BookMacster app which syncs via USB or local WLAN and allows to keep bookmarks in sync between OS X and iOS without having to upload that very personal data into obscure could services like Dropbox / iCloud / etc pp. Those are all unsafe and I will never use them.

Hello, Dr. Scott.  Indeed, Apple's iCloud syncing is the only way to sync to Safari on iOS.  And BookMacster can sync in tandem with iCloud as it does with Dropbox.  Depending on how you use your browsers and devices, it may be better to use iCloud for syncing between your Macs too, instead of Dropbox.  A couple examples, and a list of considerations are given in this Help Book page.

When you switch on iCloud syncing, the only alternative Apple gives you is to Merge the bookmarks on all of your devices.  So, if you have mostly junk bookmarks and bookmarks which are already on your Mac on your iOS device, you might want to delete all of them first.  If, on the other hand, you merge in a lot of bookmarks from iOS, first Pause syncing in BookMacster first, otherwise the Safe Sync Limit will probably trip.

When you switch on iCloud, wait a half hour or more, with devices on, for everything to stabilize.

To "switch off" syncing via Dropbox, move your .bkmslf file out of your Dropbox folder.

If you're not sure what to do, send me an email describing what browsers you use, what devices, and how often and I'll recommend something.

I've been using BookMacster on my Macs for a long time, syncing through DropBox.  My bookmarks on Safari on iOS are completely out of date now, and I'd like to sync them too.  Do I need to switch from DropBox to iCloud syncing to do this or is there a better solution that would allow me to retain my bookmarks on Dropbox for my Macs?
