It is easy to neglect the step of moving an app to your /Applications folder before using it. The following steps show how to fix that. It assumes that the app in question is Synkmark but you can swap in the name of any app on your Mac.
• If Synkmark is running (check your dock or command-tab), quit it.
• Hold down the command key on your keyboard.
• Hit the space bar. The Spotlight Search window will appear
• Type the word Synkmark into the Spotlight window. Search results will appear.
• If there is more than one search result, use the up/down arrow keys on your keyboard to choose the search result which appears to be the Synkmark application package. It may be “Synkmark.app”/
• Hold down the command key on your keyboard. At the bottom right of the Spotlight window, the “path” to the application will appear. Read it to yourself.
• If the path is /Applications/Synkmark.app, then it is already OK and you are done.
• If the path is not /Applications/Synkmark.app, continue:
• Still holding down the command key, hit the return key. A Finder window will open, and the Synkmark application package will be selected.
• In the main menubar (which is now Finder), click File > New Window. A new (second) Finder window will open and activate.
• Click in the menu: Go > Applications. The second window will now show your /Applications.
• Position the first and second Finder windows so you can see both of them.
• Drag the Synkmark application package from the first Finder window to the second Finder window.
