Definitely not 7:31AM. Probably 4:18PM

Thank you for the logs, Rob.  It contains entries at 7:31 AM, 4:18 PM and 4:27 PM today.  Is any of these about the time that you got the Check for Update window with the missing Update News?

Hi, Jerry.

I can read the update news on the web just fine, but I just got the auto-update notice for v. 1.13.5, and as usual, no change notes window.

The error occurred while extracting the archive was due to the its security signature not being updated in our RSS feed, on our server.  That problem has now been fixed.  If you Check for Update now, you should get BookMacster 1.13.5 with no trouble.

However, Rob, this turns out to be completely separate from the original problem, the Update News not showing in the Sparkle update window.  The last time you tried that, it worked.  Maybe it will work again.  If not, please see if you can look at the Update News in your web browser…

http://www.sheepsystems.com/bookmacster/UpdateNews.html

and also see if there are any telltale messages in your Console log (Applications ▸ Utilities ▸ Console.app).

We've been able to reproduce the error extracting archive problem and are working on fixing it.

Hello MrX, and Rob too,

Short version:  Please launch BookMacster and click in the menu: Help ▸ Trouble Zipper.  It will assemble a package of data for us, including your Console logs that may give us a clue as to what's going on.  Answer Don't Include to all of the questions, because this issue does not involve your bookmarks etc.  UPDATE 22:48 USA-Pacific.  Never mind sending data.  We've been able to reproduce the problem.

Longer version.  I am unable to reproduce the problem here, although now I see we have two users with this issue.  Searching the internet for An error occurred while extracting the archive. Please try again later. indicates that this problem is not common, but occurs occasionally with many Mac apps which use the Sparkle updater as BookMacster does, and some of the "solutions" are plausible.  However, there are so many different "solutions" that quite possibly no one really knows what's going on.  I want to see if we can get to the bottom of this and fix it.

Thank you.

The new update will not install on both of my Macs. After downloading I see this:

Will do the direct download.

But note that I've auto-updated numerous times in the past and don't recall ever having a problem with the download and install.

Oh boy, Rob.  Unless you're having trouble updating other non-Mac-App-Store apps too, this looks like some weird, intermittent incompatibility between our hosting provider, Hosting Zoom, and your ISP.   There was a Bookdog user about five years ago who could never update.  We had to post it for him on a different server.  We even made it an automated part of our update publishing.

Hosting Zoom operates redundant data centers, three in the USA and two in Europe.  So I'm not even sure where to begin.   Can you download BookMacster manually from the new-user link shown below?

Whoops, spoke a bit too soon. The 1.13.3 update finished downloading, now I'm getting an Update Error! message (while extracting the archive).

Tried it twice and got the same thing both times.

Hilarious: running 1.13.2 I did "check for updates". This time the Release Notes window appeared like it's supposed to!

Could be a clue: maybe it's only on auto-updates where it fails.

Thank you, Rob.  Very strange.  I'll look into it.

By the way, BookMacster 1.13.3 was published several hours ago.  BookMacster 1.13.2, no longer available, had a bug that affected some existing users of Google Chrome.  If you're using Google Chrome, make sure you got BookMacster 1.13.3.

For anyone else not seeing the Version History, as a workaround, you can always look here…

OK, you asked for it, you got it. See attached screenshot, which I took moments ago when BookMacster said it wanted to update.
