BookMacster 1.11 is now available.  If you already have BookMacster installed, launch BookMacster and click in the menu: BookMacster ▸ Check for Update.

Thank y'all for your patience.

BookMacster version 1.11 has 88 bug fixes and other improvements so far, mostly in the area of syncing.   But it's not done yet, because late last week I discovered that under some conditions, bookmarks reorderings will not always be pushed to iCloud.  We're working on that, then need to retest with Dropbox.

I myself very much prefer small, frequent updates to monster updates that change the world, but sometimes many parts of a program are necessarily touch, and a big update is unavoidable.

Thank you for your patience, and I hope to be back here with good news soon.

There was one failure.  Figured it out and am working on it now.

It looks like you'd have to delete them all and re-export.  This just takes a minute to start but will take a long time for the upload to run in the background.

Please wait on with this for a day or so, because I'm going to give you a better way.  But I want to test and make sure it works perfectly first.

Regarding your fear of deleting all of your bookmarks, I appreciate that, because indeed it is easy to do that in BookMacster, although no easier than it is in Safari or any web browser.  It is in fact a good fear to have.  However, because you've already got your bookmarks in BookMacster, and especially with Lion's Auto Save and Versions, and/or a Time Machine backup, you can always get them back.

Things are more treacherous with our old app, Bookdog, because Bookdog does not have its own document storage.

So now that my bookmarks are in Google Bookmarks without tags, how do I add them?

BookMacster has lots of options and I have to admit, I'm overwhelmed and confused by everything. I'm so afraid I'm going to somehow manage to delete all of my bookmarks in all of my clients because I've done something wrong.

First of all, regarding the apparent bug, I'm still stumped.  Of course, I have the next BookMacster version here, BookMacster 1.11, in which here are a slew of changes, and maybe we fixed it unknowingly.

Regarding Google Bookmarks, yes that is expected because the people in the Bookmarks department at Google don't believe in folders.  Instead, they use labels, or what most other bookmarking people call tags.  The Help Book has a little explanation of how the two systems differ…

http://sheepsystems.com/bookmacster/HelpBook/methodsofRelatingBokmrks

Also, BookMacster has a way to convert your folder structure to tags, and vice versa.  The results are usually a rough approximation of what you want, but it gives you a start.  It's described in the Help Book, here…

You'll probably want to use those advanced options just once, for an initial Import or Export, then turn them off for regular syncing.

That worked...yay....thanks!

What did you mean when you said "preserve your current folder structure"?  I'm not sure if this is related but when I view my bookmarks in Google Bookmarks, there is no longer a nice folder structure.  Is that expected?

I can't reproduce anything like that, Kristy.  Please try this…
  • Change your last Client to Google Bookmarks – New/Other
  • You'll be asked to enter Account Info.  Do so.
  • Now, can you add another Client and get the four you want?
If so, you can use the round up/down arrow buttons on the right to put Google Bookmarks last, which it should be, in order to preserve your current folder structure.

So you have lots of potential clients.  Weird.  Thank you; I'll be back here when I have something figured out.

When viewing from the Safari option:

Chrome (which is grayed out)
Delicious - New/Other
Diigo - New/Other
Firefox (which is grayed out)
Google Bookmarks - New/Other
Pinboard - New/Other
Safari (with a checkmark next to it)
Other Macintosh User Account
Choose File (Advanced)

Thanks,
Kristy

Kristy, how many items do you see in that popup menu?  Just Safari, Firefox, Chrome and Google Bookmarks, 4?  Or are there more?

This could be total user error and me not fully understanding how it's supposed to work so please feel free to state things that seem really obvious. Smiley

I Quit Bookmacster and restarted it again and same result.  My clients are currently in the following order:
Firefox (with just a remove button next to it)
Chrome (with just a remove button next to it)
Safari (with an add and remove button next to it)

When I click the Add button nothing happens.  If I click on Safari, Chrome or Firefox, I do see all of the options, including Google Bookmarks - New/Other.

Hello, Kristy.

So, you're saying that clicking the big round "(+)" button to the left of the Client names does nothing.

Could be some kind of bug state.  Try to relaunch BookMacster.

If that doesn't work, click one of the names Firefox, Chrome or Safari.  A popup menu will appear.  Is Google Bookmarks – New/Other available in the popup menu?
